Installation of the Most Rev. Wilton Gregory
The National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus (NBCCC) has traditionally offered a prayer service and reception prior to the installation of one of its members as bishop, that he may enter his episcopal service assured of our continued prayers and support.
Roughly 50 clergy, religious sisters, seminarians and laity attended NBCCC’s vespers service for Wilton Gregory on the eve of his installation as Archbishop of Washington D.C. Deacon Melvin Tardy (NBCCC president) presided, and historic St. Augustine Parish in D.C. played a prominent role — its choir offered beautiful music and its pastor, Father Pat Smith, preached.
At a clergy luncheon prior to Gregory’s installation, on behalf of NBCCC, Deacon Tardy presented Archbishop Gregory with a special gift from NBCCC: a purple, Afrocentric chasuble and a matching miter commissioned from Father Melvin James of California. The gathering primarily included the apostolic nuncio, cardinals, bishops and priests as well as family and friends of Gregory.
