Bro. Roy Smith, C.S.C.

Born the eighth of nine children, Roy Smith became a standout athlete at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, but declined a football scholarship to the University of Louisville when a brother of Holy Cross persuaded him to join their order.  Currently, Br. Roy is the director of development for the Midwest Province, Congregation of Holy Cross (South Bend, IN), helping raise funds for retired brothers and their health care. He’s also served at the St. Charles Boys Home in Milwaukee, at Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend and at Holy Trinity High School in Chicago.

A past president of the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, Roy is an active member of the Joint Conference planning committee and a founding member of the Black Catholic Advisory Board for the Diocese of Ft. Wayne / South Bend.  Wherever he has been, Br. Roy’s leadership, good works and congenial personality have opened doors for other Black Catholics. He’s also a strong advocate and mentor for Black youth, from his work with Slice of Life to St. Augustine Parish Youth Ministry in South Bend.  Br. Roy also sings in the St. Augustine Gospel Choir when his schedule permits.
